SCOTTSDALE, AZ, October 18, 2011—Patrick J. Dempsey’s 50-year career as a company owner in the textile services business took the spotlight at TRSA’s Annual Conference & Exhibits here when the Scranton-area entrepreneur received the association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dempsey is chairman of Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply, Inc., Jessup, PA. He is hailed across the United States as one of the industry’s leading engineers and for his efforts to guide his contemporaries around the country, frequently contributing trade journal articles and speaking at industry conferences and seminars. He has served on national association boards (including TRSA’s), their executive committees and other industry organizations.
His dedication to benchmarking—exchanging his company’s performance statistics and other financial data with owners of similar operations—has been credited for supporting the growth of many companies nationwide. As a TRSA leader, Dempsey has prompted the association to develop education and training resources that have enabled textile services managers around the world to sell and serve customers more effectively and operate their laundries and routes more efficiently.
“Throughout his career, Pat has never stopped learning or sharing his knowledge as a consultant, mentor, teacher and historian. No individual in our industry is more respected,” stated TRSA President Joseph Ricci in presenting the honor. He described Dempsey as an endless resource of "pearls of wisdom" about textile services operations that he will provide to anyone he meets in the business.
Dempsey and his brother Richard (who passed away in April) started their company in Dunmore in 1959 with five employees. In the decades to follow their operation would become a proving ground for new laundry technologies: washing, drying, ironing and folding. The Dempseys would also become resource conservation leaders, adopting technologies to produce more laundry with less water and energy. This effort culminated in the company’s receipt of the first-ever Green Powerhouse Award from the Northeast Pennsylvania Business Journal in 2009 and selection to PPL Electric Utilities’ Energy-Smart Business Honor Roll this year.
Today, based at what’s recognized as the most technologically advanced laundry in Pennsylvania, Dempsey Uniform & Linen also serves businesses in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and Virginia. The company has more than 300 employees.
