In Frederick, Maryland, Opportunities for Work and Play Create an Enviable Lifestyle

Frederick’s long history of inclusion and acceptance began with religious diversity. During the 19th century, the city was well known for its religious pluralism. One of the main thoroughfares, Church Street, featured a half-dozen major churches. The abolitionist poet John Greenleaf Whittier immortalized this view of Frederick in a poem that included the lines, “The clustered spires of Frederick stand, green-walled by the hills of Maryland.” That set of clustered spires has become both a symbol and a catchphrase for Frederick. The silhouette of the spires is incorporated in the city seal and other municipal logos, and the phrase itself pops up in names like the Clustered Spires Cemetery and the Clustered Spires Golf Course.

Frederick’s relative proximity to Washington, D.C. has always been essential to its economic development. The largest employer, Fort Detrick, employs around 10,000 skilled and professional workers, many of whom report to work at The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), the Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, and the National Cancer Institute. The majority of Frederick’s highly educated workforce, many of whom have earned advanced professional degrees, commute to work by automobile instead of taking readily available public transportation.

Downtown Frederick also has its fair share of employers. In addition to retail stores and dining establishments, it’s home to more than 600 businesses and organizations with nearly 5,000 employees on the books. A growing technology sector has sprung up in a variety of renovated, historic spaces, as well as in newer office buildings located along Carroll Creek Park. Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply is pleased to support the business community in and around Frederick by providing uniform rentals, linen rentals, and facility supplies to retail, service, commercial, and industrial companies including Penske Truck Leasing, Rev Drill, and Farmers Co-Op.

In Frederick, residents’ appreciation for art and culture extends to the Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET), a professional theater company housed on the lower level of the Francis Scott Key Hotel. The Frederick Symphony Orchestra performs an annual season comprised of five classical music concerts. Other musical organizations include the Frederick Chorale, the Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra, the Choral Arts Society of Frederick, the Frederick Symphonic Band, and the 150-member Frederick Children’s Chorus.
