Hagerstown, Maryland, is a Center for Transport and Industry

For Hagerstown, man’s invention of flight ushered in a busy, prosperous era of aircraft development and manufacturing. For many years, Fairchild Aircraft – known initially as the Kreider-Reisner Aircraft Company – was a significant employer in the region. Fairchild built many civilian and military aircraft that were widely known and respected for their versatility and reliability. In fact, Fairchild’s A-10 Thunderbolt (known to pilots affectionately as the Warthog) is still in active service with the United States Air Force.

The Hagerstown Aviation Museum, devoted to “Preserving Hagerstown’s Aviation Heritage,” currently displays a variety of historic airplanes of the 20th century in and around the Hagerstown Regional Airport, including the first one ever built in Hagerstown – the 1919 Bellanca CE biplane. Although there’s no actual museum building for people to visit, local families, students, and aviation buffs enjoy attending occasional drive-in/fly-in events and expos. Plans are underway to fund a permanent home for the storied collection of flying machines that includes a 1928 Kreider Reisner KR-31, a 1943 Fairchild PT-19 #33, and a 1949 North American T-6 Texan N9492Z.

The town’s long-held position as a hub for railroads and highways made it an early crossroads for travel and exploration. The Western Maryland 202, a restored 4-6-2 steam locomotive, is on static display in City Park near the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.

The Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum invites visitors to experience a restored roundhouse filled with artifacts and displays from the boom times of the railroading era, including model trains and a railroading research library. Outside, people can walk around restored train engines, cars, and a streetcar, all within a few feet of the still-active train yard.

For decades, Hagerstown’s economy depended heavily on railroad transportation and manufacturing industries, the most notable of which related to aviation, trucking, automobiles, textiles, and furniture. As it serves as the chief industrial and commercial hub for the greater tri-state area of Western Maryland, South Central Pennsylvania, and the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, transportation companies and the businesses that support them are still significant employers.

Today, the city’s business environment also supports a broad spectrum of modern service companies. The fertile land surrounding Hagerstown is dotted with farms and other agricultural concerns, many of which have made significant contributions to the local economy for decades. In search of another source of revenue, the city has placed an increased focus on tourism, attracting Civil War history buffs and avid shoppers who drive long distances to patronize the 100-store Hagerstown Premium Outlets. By providing high quality uniform rental services, linen rentals, and facility supplies to retail, commercial, and industrial establishments in the Hagerstown area, Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply is pleased to contribute to the region’s continued economic growth and prosperity.
