Dempsey Recognized by Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs

Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply, Inc. was recently recognized by the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs for participating in Operation Hire: Maryland's 100 Day Veteran Hiring Challenge. Dempsey also received the Governor's Citation for services provided during this initiative. During the challenge, Dempsey participated in several Veteran Job Club events throughout the state aimed at preparing vets for employment in the private sector and also attended job fairs specifically targeted at employing veterans.

Dempsey's commitment to hiring veterans remains a priority. Dempsey would like to thank all American Veterans for their service and sacrifice, we are eternally grateful.

Dempsey Achieves Hygienically Clean Certification

The Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) recently announced that Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply has achieved certification in the Hygienically Clean Certification Program.

Hygienically Clean Certification recognizes a companies' commitment to cleanliness through third-party biological testing and inspection. A growing number of businesses are highly conscientious about the sanitation of their work practices and processes. TRSA's Hygienically Clean certification helps achieve this objective by ensuring textile products laundered for businesses meet key disinfection criteria and best management practices across all market segments.

In their Father's Day edition, Business Weekly recognized the Dempsey family for successfully transferring Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply from founder, Pat Dempsey, to his children P.J. and Kristin Dempsey. The article highlighted the challenges for a family business of having both interested and prepared successors. Exemplifying their accomplishments, Pat celebrated his 80th birthday last year and the company will make a major addition to its Jessup facility this year to accommodate business growth.

ASTM, the globally recognized leader in developing voluntary consensus standards, has developed the Standard Practice for Sustainable Laundry Best Management Practices, ASTM D7841-13. The standard recognizes key criteria in TRSA's CleanGreenTM certification as universal indicators of maximum sustainability in commercial laundry work, thus building consumer confidence in GleanGreenTM certification. Dempsey's Named "Entrepreneurs of the Year"

Patrick, PJ and Kristin Dempsey have been named "Entrepreneurs of the Year" by Junior Achievement of Northeastern Pennsylvania. They will be inducted into the JA Business Hall of Fame during an induction ceremony at Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono, PA on May 30th, 2014. The JA Business Hall of Fame honors business leaders who have made outstanding contributions to free enterprise and to society. Since 1919, Junior Achievement's purpose has been to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise and understand business and economics to improve the quality of their lives.

Co-Founder Patrick J. Dempsey Celebrates 80 Years

Co-founder and Chairman of the Board Pat Dempsey Celebrated his 80th birthday in December 2013. To celebrate this milestone, his son President PJ Dempsey and daughter, Vice President Kristin Dempsey, presented him with a refurbished model of a 1960 International Metro Mite. That was the model that Pat and his brother, co-founder Dick Dempsey, chose for their "founding fleet" of just three trucks in 1960.

The truck was presented to Pat in the Jessup plant in the presence of the production team. Hundreds of employees across the company signed giant cards from each location that were presented to him on his birthday with the truck.

Dempsey Executive Recognized for a Half Century of Service

The Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) recognized Dempsey's Tom Mallas for 50 years of service to the industry at its Annual Conference in Sonoma, CA. Mallas has driven Dempsey's technology advancements during his tenure.

Also recognized for extraordinary tenure were Carmen Libassi, who retired in April, for 45 years, Sal "Sam" DeAngelo for 35 years and Ellie Occulto for 25 years.

Dempsey Customers Now Earn Points with the Green Restaurant Association

The Green Restaurant Association (GRA) announced that it has incorporated TRSA's Clean Green certification for textile services operations into its Green Restaurant program, enabling restaurants to earn points toward the Green Restaurant designation by using a Clean Green certified laundry.

Dempsey Receives Distinguished Citizen Award

Patrick J. Dempsey, Sr. was recognized with the Distinguished Citizen Award by the NEPA Boy Scouts of America at the Genetti Conference Center in Wilkes-Barre on March 14th, 2013. Established by the Boy Scouts of America, the Distinguished Citizen Award recognizes noteworthy and extraordinary leadership of citizens in communities across the United States. Honoring distinguished citizenship delivers a message to youth that character counts.Dempsey shared the honor with John C. Metz, Chairman and CEO, Metz Culinary Management.  Mr. Metz’ company has been a customer of Dempsey Uniform & Linen for over 20 years.  Former starting quarterback for Penn State University, Matt McGloin, delivered a key note speech.

Dempsey Wins Parade Award

Scranton's St. Patrick's Day Parade took place on March 9th, 2013. Dempsey unveiled its new float which include a 10’ inflatable washing machine that blew out real bubbles and – a parade first – three 13’ helium balloons!  It was a true family event with the Dempsey family, the Y-Guy, employees and their families marching through Scranton.  The new float won the “St. Patrick’s Theme” Award!

the Bistro Napkin, is featured prominently in
the newly opened Ambar restaurant in Washington, DC. The restaurant itself is described by Eater DC as "a modern take on Balkan cuisine." The Eater DC goes on to say that the restaurant features "unique touches such as the city's first Rakia Bar (a fruit liqueur)." From a design perspective, Ambar chose the fresh and different styling of Dempsey's Bistro Napkin, with its tight weave and bold red stripe.

Red Kap Awards Dempsey "Premier Distributor"

Red Kap, the leading manufacturer of quality workwear for the uniform rental industry, awarded Dempsey the designation of "Premier Distributor." The designation recognizes Dempsey's significant purchase volume from Red Kap. "Thank you for your loyalty to Red Kap," said Stuart Jackson, Regional Sales Director, as he presented Dempsey with a plaque in March 2012 in Las Vegas. Dempsey is a single-source supplier of Red Kap garments for the uniform rental programs that it provides to industrial, automotive and manufacturing industries.

Dempsey Awarded "Most Beautiful" for 3rd Year

For the 3rd straight year, Dempsey's float in the Scranton's St. Patrick's Day Parade was awarded "Most Beautiful Float." The float's theme was "Clean & Green," reflecting Dempsey's laundry operation which cleans uniforms, linens and floor mats in a green, environmentally-friendly way. The Dempsey family, over 100 employees with family members, and the Y-Guy marched along the streets of Scranton spreading good cheer, candy & bubbles!

Dempsey is 1st to Achieve Clean Green Certification

The Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) has announced that Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply is the first company in the United States to achieve certification in the TRSA Clean Green Certification Program.

Clean Green Certification recognizes companies that demonstrate responsible leadership in sustainability and conservation to protect the environment. The program acknowledges a textile service company’s continuing commitment to improving efficiencies in water and energy conservation and adoption of best management practices for reusing, reclaiming and recycling resources. A business that receives uniform rentals, linen services, floor mats and other reusable textiles laundered by a Clean Green facility can point to the certification as evidence that these were washed, dried and finished with techniques selected to maximize sustainability.

News Recognizes Dempsey for Being "Green"

WNEP News, which is the leader in news coverage for Northeastern Pennsylvania, Central Pennsylvania and the Poconos, featured Dempsey in a segment titled, the “Power to Save.”  This environmental initiative shows viewers how businesses and consumers can save money and the environment.  WNEP chose to feature Dempsey in this segment after Dempsey received the first Clean Green Certification in the United States.  The report showed video highlights of some of Dempsey’s initiatives, which have made it an environmental leader in its industry.

Dempsey Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

Patrick J. Dempsey’s 50-year career as a company owner in the textile services business took the spotlight at TRSA’s Annual Conference & Exhibits 2011 when he received the association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. TRSA is the national association of the textile rental services industry.

The TRSA Operator Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor that can be attained by a professional in the textile rental industry. The award recognizes exceptional personal service to both the textile services industry and TRSA. Candidates are nominated by their operator peers and are ultimately selected by the TRSA Executive Committee.“Throughout his career, Pat has never stopped learning or sharing his knowledge as a consultant, mentor, teacher and historian. No individual in our industry is more respected,” stated TRSA President Joseph Ricci in presenting the honor. Read more.

Lewis Wins Volunteer Leadership Award

Mark Lewis, Corporate Sales Manager, received the TRSA Volunteer Leadership Award at the association’s Annual Conference & Exhibits 2011. TRSA is the national association of the textile rental services industry, whose members provide uniform rental and linen services to business and industry across the United States and Canada.

The Volunteer Leadership Award acknowledges the contributions of TRSA volunteer leaders that have contributed their time and energy for the better of the industry by sharing their knowledge and experience to support TRSA’s education, training, information-sharing, benchmarking and research and selected by the TRSA Board and staff.

Lewis was a featured speaker at the Conference.  He lead discussion on TRSA’s new “Clean Green” accreditation program, which focuses on best practices for reducing energy and water consumption and sustainability that reduces a laundry’s impact on the environment.

Dempsey History Book Wins Writing Award

Soap in the Veins: 50 Years at Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply, written by Corporate History.Net, earned a 2011 Apex Grand Award for Special Publications. Tough judging is a hallmark of this program, which set the highest standards in the corporate communications field. Dempsey commissioned the book to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2009.

Co-Founder Dick Dempsey Died on Monday, April 11th, 2011

Richard J. “Dick” Dempsey, co-founder of Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply, died Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 75. Dempsey, a natural and gifted salesman, co-founded Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply, Inc. with his brother Patrick in Dunmore, PA in 1959. They began with five employees and one route of business. Since that time, the company has become a multi-state operation servicing seven states with over three hundred employees. Dempsey Uniform & Linen rents uniforms, linens and floor mats to a wide variety of business with a weekly service that includes pick-up, cleaning and delivery.  Read More...

Dempsey Uniform Featured in Marcellus Program - 2011

Mark Lewis, Corporate Sales Manager of Dempsey Uniform, participated in a panel discussion focusing on local success stories in the Marcellus Shale region.  Lewis explained how Dempsey Uniform, which supplies Flame Resistant (FR) shirts, pants and coveralls, has helped business protect their employees and comply with safety regulations, like 29 CFR 1910.132(a), NFPA 2112 and NFPA 2113.

The program was presented by MetroAction and Keystone College to help local business owners learn from industry experts about opportunities to deliver services and support the energy industry. Presenters included industry professionals Janice Lobdell, Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Association (PIOGA), and Mike Narcavage, Chesapeake Energy Corporation.

Scranton's St. Patrick's Day Parade took place on March 12th, 2011. Dempsey was in attendance, displaying their "Green Laundry Operation". Together, the Dempsey family, employees and the Y-Guy™ joined in the parade's 50th year to march along the streets of Scranton spreading good cheer, candy & bubbles! Energy-Smart Business Honor Roll - 2011

In February 2011, PPL Electric Utilities entered Dempsey into its E-power® Energy-Smart Business Honor Roll.  With this award, PPL recognized Dempsey's recent energy-saving efforts in its production facilities.  "This organization has demonstrated the kind of awareness and commitment that will lead our communities to better energy and environmental practices today and into the future," writes David DeCampli, President, PPL Electric Utilites Corporation.

Dempsey Leads Industry in Green Program - 2011

Mark Lewis, Corporate Sales Manager for Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply Inc., and Steve Kallenbach, Regional Sales Manager for American Dawn Inc. (ADI) led an interactive "Clean Green" Webinar for members of the Textile Rental Services Association (TRSA) in February. The webinar focused on how a laundry's environmental friendliness has become an important point of difference in selecting one supplier over another.

The TRSA described Dempsey as "renowned in the textile services industry for its water- and energy-saving business practices and the goodwill the company has gained from them." As part of the webinar, Dempsey shared its initiatives and encouraged members to undertake efforts that would position them as the most environmentally conscious choice for uniforms and linens.

Allied Services resident Donald Fickus cleans a wire hanger Friday for Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply Inc. at the Allied Services vocational division in Scranton.

On January 28, Dempsey recognized workers from Allied Services in Scranton for their hard work. Employees from Allied's Vocational division have recycled eight million hangers from Dempsey Uniform and Linen Supply over the past three years. "We employ several hundred challenged individuals and to give them this opportunity, it's tremendous for Allied, it's great for the environment, it's good for the community, and it really shows what employers can do when they work together," said Allied Services President Bill Conaboy. 

Dempsey presented the Allied employees with a "Golden Hanger" to mark the milestone and their mascot, the Y-Guy™, visited with the workers. 


U.S. EPA Sustainability Partnership - 2011

In December 2010, Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply, Inc. joined the US EPA Sustainability Partnership Program. The Sustainability Partnership (SP) is an EPA Region 3 initiative to facilitate environmental sustainability at major organizations in the mid-Atlantic region through a collaborative effort.  By sharing expertise within programs such as WaterSense, Energy Star and WasteWise, etc., EPA has proven that working with industry, institutions and governments can produce significant results in the reduction of waste generation, natural resource usage, and energy consumption.  Our collaborative efforts can reduce environmental footprints and often result in cost savings to the organization as well!
