Located more than 4,000 miles from Italy, Binghamton offers a Surprising Delicious homage to Italian Dining

Binghamton, New York, founded at the geographical confluence of the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers, is a key intersection of highways: Interstate 81, running from Alabama to the Canadian border, and Interstate 84, which connects the New York City area with routes west to Ohio. Also, Interstate 88, which connects Binghamton to New York’s Capital District, starts here, along with State routes that take travelers North to Utica and Northeast up into the Adirondack Park.

Certain cities have become famous for their regional food specialties: Buffalo is known for hot chicken wings and Philadelphia is the home of cheese-steak sandwiches. Binghamton has the “spiedie,” lovingly marinated meat skewered and grilled, then served on a soft slice of Italian bread or a sub roll. Tradition holds that spiedies originated in the Italian neighborhoods of nearby Endicott, New York, and featured lamb as the protein of choice. Today, spiedies are made with many other meats, including beef, venison, pork, veal, and chicken. At restaurants, food fests, and food trucks, chicken seems to be the favorite, with fans clamoring for a lemon-garlic marinade instead of the original sauce, akin to Italian salad dressing.

One of the hallmarks of Italian cuisine is its simplicity. Many dishes have very few ingredients and, traditionally, rather than spend inordinate amounts of time on technique and preparation, cooks have focused their efforts on making high quality ingredients shine. Italian cooking essentials typically include: pasta, olive oil, tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, dried oregano, prosciutto, pancetta, garlic, cheese (parmesan, ricotta, mascarpone), fresh basil, capers, and wine.

Binghamton’s ethnic heritage has spawned many exceptional Italian restaurants, including Little Venice, which doubles as an art gallery downtown. Restaurant founder, Rocco “Rocky” Carulli, combined his passion for art with his love for the culinary delights of his home country. Today, the walls are covered with signed paintings from local artists, including the city’s largest collection of work by Armondo Dellasanta, and rising star Anthony Brunelli. Another multi-generational Italian restaurant is a local favorite, Cortese Restaurant, founded in 1947 by Angeline Cortese and her sons, James and Nathan. In addition to supplying Cortese’s, Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply is proud to support Sake-Tumi and Burger Mondays, just a few of the eateries who leverage our experience and expertise to help keep their businesses productive and profitable.

The craft brewing phenomenon has not missed Binghamton, with its large population of college students from Binghamton University, Broome Community College, and other educational institutions. There are two brewpubs downtown, Galaxy Brewing and Water Street Brewing. Binghamton Brewing is actually located in neighboring Johnson City, and The North Brewery can be found in Endicott. The area celebrates its culinary offerings with annual festivals including the famous Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally, July Fest, and Restaurant Week. All three offer tasting, judging, and contests to encourage people from all over the region to try Binghamton’s local cuisine.
