Arlington, Virginia, has a Highly Educated, Affluent Workforce

Arlington County, often incorrectly assumed to be a town or city, has no incorporated towns within its borders. At a geographic size of a mere 26 square miles, it is the smallest, self-governing county in the United States. Although best known for Arlington National Cemetery, the county is also the site of two other famed landmarks, the Ronald Reagan National Airport and the Pentagon.

Given Arlington’s proximity to Washington, D.C., it’s no surprise that the major employer in the county is the Federal Government, including the Department of Defense (DOD), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the U.S. Marshalls Service, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and many other cabinet departments and agencies.

In addition to the government’s presence, various corporate headquarters and a number of well-known national organizations are located in Arlington. Examples include The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the United Service Organizations (USO), the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the Nature Conservancy.

Arlington offers several options to those aspiring to higher education. George Mason University’s Arlington campus contains the Antonin Scalia School of Law, the School of Policy, Government, and International Affairs, and the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution. The four-year, Catholic, co-ed Marymount University, a fixture in Arlington since 1950, offers degrees at Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate levels in a broad variety of disciplines.

In 2006, CNN Money reported that 36% of Arlington’s residents held graduate degrees, a testament to the many excellent career opportunities in the region. The website also ranked Arlington seventh in its listing of “Best Places for the Rich and Single.” In 2009, it was ranked second nationally for people ages 25-34 earning $100,000 or more annually.

During the 1960s, county government officials noted a decline in the downtown area. A parking shortage was driving shoppers away and out to the new malls and plazas in the suburbs. In response, during the planning of the Washington Metro system, officials shrewdly negotiated for two lines to be routed directly through the downtown. After this bold move toward revitalization, ensuing stops at the Washington National Airport and the Pentagon paved the way for rapid development of commercial and residential properties, including Crystal City and Pentagon City, right near those downtown mass transit lines. As retail, commercial, and industrial enterprises continue to prosper, suppliers like Dempsey Uniform & Linen Supply play a crucial role in supporting their expansion. Dempsey provides professional uniform rental services, linen rentals, and facility supplies to a broad array of companies in and around Arlington County, including the Red Apron Butchery.
